A new home online for the dachshunds, on the house.

This week Atlantic Canadian Dachshund Rescue moved off its old page-builder site and onto a website built just for the rescue. It is the first launch we have done with our design fee waived in full, and we wanted to say why.

Small businesses are our day job. But an all-volunteer charity that puts every dollar into vet bills and foster care is exactly the kind of organization that deserves a proper website and can least afford one. So this one was on us.

Built on the house, on purpose

Atlantic Canadian Dachshund Rescue is an all-volunteer registered charity that has been giving dachshunds across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland a second chance since 2001. Every dollar donated goes back to the dogs. That is exactly how it should be, and it also means there is never money left over for a website.

So we waived our design fee entirely and built the site as our donation to the rescue. Not a discount, not a stripped-down version. The rescue paid nothing for the design and build, and got the same hand-coded, mobile-first site a paying client gets.

Design fee waived. Full custom build. A rescue that spends every penny on the dogs should still have a website that works as hard as its volunteers.

Everything a rescue actually needs

A Dogs in Our Care page with a proper profile for every adoptable dachshund: photos, temperament, needs, fee and a one-click application. A live event calendar for Wienerpawlooza and the Wiener Walks. Adoption, foster and surrender forms that work. A Donate button that goes straight to the rescue, and a note on every page that 100% of donations go back to the dogs.

The look is theirs: soft blues, blush and cream, a hand-lettered script accent, paw prints and bones in the margins, and the dogs' own photos everywhere. Warm, gentle and easy to use, because the people visiting are often making a hard decision.

Adoptable-dog profiles, a live calendar, working forms and a donate button that goes straight to the dogs.

The short version

Why this one was on us.

  1. Fee waived, standard kept. The rescue got the same hand-coded build as any paying client.
  2. Build around the mission. Adopt, foster, donate and surrender are one click from every page.
  3. Giving back is part of the business. We will do this again for the right cause.
