If you make your own social media graphics in Canva, a few small features can save you real time, and they are easy to miss in the menus.

This carousel from our Instagram covers five of them. Four slides are short screen recordings, so you can watch each hack happen. The videos have no sound, and under each one there is a written description of what it shows, for anyone who would rather read. Below, we go through it slide by slide.

Canva hacks: simple shortcuts that save time

The first slide of our Canva series: tips, tools and design tricks for better content. Each hack that follows is one small feature, shown the way you would use it in a real design.

Slide 2 of 7 · Video, 19 seconds, no soundWhat the video shows: A single purple line is duplicated again and again with the Duplicate button, leaving a staggered, uneven stack of lines. All of them are selected with a drag, then right-click, Space evenly, Tidy up (the menu shows the shortcut Alt+Shift+T), and the lines snap into a straight, evenly spaced block.

Tidy up: fix messy spacing in one click

Select all your elements, right-click, then choose Space evenly and Tidy up, and Canva will evenly space everything for you. It is the quick fix for a row of icons or a list of lines that never quite lines up by eye.

  1. Select every element you want spaced; in the video, a drag around them does it.
  2. Right-click and choose Space evenly.
  3. Choose Tidy up. The menu lists its shortcut, Alt+Shift+T.

Select, right-click, Space evenly, Tidy up.

Slide 3 of 7 · Video, 20 seconds, no soundWhat the video shows: A red wax-seal heart sits on a grid background with the Shadows panel open and Drop selected. The blur, distance and intensity sliders are dragged back and forth, and the shadow under the heart changes as each one moves.

Drop shadow: the sticker effect

A drop shadow makes a cut-out image look like a sticker sitting on the page. In Canva it lives in the photo editor:

  1. Select your element.
  2. Go to Edit photo → Shadows and choose Drop.
  3. Adjust the blur, angle, distance and intensity until you like the result.

The same Shadows panel offers None, Glow and Outline too, and a colour for the shadow.

Slide: View collection. Found an element you love? See the whole collection. Right-click the element, choose Info, then select View collection to see matching graphics. A vintage flower stamp is selected next to the right-click menu: Copy Ctrl+C, Copy style Ctrl+Alt+C, Paste Ctrl+V, Duplicate Ctrl+D, Delete, Info, and a View collection button.

View collection: find the whole set

Found an element you love? See the whole collection. Right-click the element, choose Info, then select View collection to see matching graphics, so the rest of your design can use pieces that go with it.

The same right-click menu lists five shortcuts worth knowing:

  • Copy: Ctrl+C
  • Copy style: Ctrl+Alt+C
  • Paste: Ctrl+V
  • Duplicate: Ctrl+D
  • Delete: the Delete key
Slide 5 of 7 · Video, 13 seconds, no soundWhat the video shows: The art style of a red wax-seal heart is copied, and the cursor turns into a paint roller. Clicking a box of three black, hand-sketched stars applies it: after a few seconds the stars come back as red wax stars that match the heart.

Copy art style: one look, any graphic

Copy the colours, textures and effects from one graphic to another in just one click. Pick the graphic whose look you want, choose Copy art style, then click the graphic you want to restyle.

The Style menu also offers Copy basic style; the video uses Copy art style.

One click from a heart to a matching set of stars.

Slide 6 of 7 · Video, 14 seconds, no soundWhat the video shows: The art style of a cluster of three pink, hand-drawn hearts is copied, and the cursor turns into a paint roller. Clicking the uploaded "J&J Design" text, in plain grey, applies it: after a few seconds the lettering turns the same textured pink as the hearts.

Copy art style onto your text

Give your text the same colours, texture and style as any Canva element in one click. The trick on the slide turns the text into an image first:

  1. Create your text and download it as a PNG with a transparent background.
  2. Upload the PNG back into Canva.
  3. Right-click the graphic you want to copy, select Copy art style, then click your uploaded text to apply it.
